Is this dspd?

Post a new topicby livingwith on Fri Feb 06, 2009 10:45 am

I’m writing about my husband. Ever since I’ve known him he would randomly fall asleep during the day and not a little doze, he honestly could not help it. He finds it ridiculously difficult to get up in the morning and takes frequent daytime naps. There will be times I’ll call him and he won’t answer and just need hear it. He often doesn’t respond to alarms he sets for himself.

A distinguishing feature of DSPS to me is that if I get a normal amount of sleep, I don't experience daytime fatigue. So maybe I don't get to sleep till 4am, but if I can sleep till noon, I can stay up till 4am again and don't ever feel somnolent. That said, the social problems caused by DSPS lead almost directly to anxiety, depression, or both. Anxiety can exacerbate the delay in sleep onset, and depression can cause daytime somnolence. At one point I was really depressed and I often slept 8am-10pm, which looked to others like I all I did was sleep, but I actually was up 10 hrs every night. Unfortunately, that's a really unhealthy schedule because it completely lacks bright light. So definitely find a doctor aware of DSPS because treating only the anxiety/depression isn't a good solution, but don't treat only the DSPS either for same reason.
