Child waking up and running in a daze

Post a new topicby morrismorris on Sun Jan 27, 2008 11:36 pm

My son is 7 years old and every once in a while he will wake up towards the begining of the night, usually within the first hour or two of going to sleep and will start running around. His eyes are open, he seems somewhat aware of his surroundings and will respond to my direction but will not speak, acts sort of in a daze and can't seem to help running back and forth. It almost looks like he is in a trance of sorts. Then after a few minutes he climbs back in bed and doesn't seem to have any recollection of what just happened. I don't think it is Night Terrors because he doesn't seem scared or if he is, it certainly wouldn't be described as, "terror", maybe just a little nervous.
Does anyone have any idea what it could be or where I can go for further info?

I used to do this as a child, and my younger sister used to aswell.
My sister used to get up and run about in a "flap" making strange noises some nights. Other nights though she'd be completely silent, and just walk about seeming awake but a little confused. I think her behaviour was to do with needing the toliet though, because after we'd steer her towards it and talk loudly to her trying to wake her up properly she'd be fine, and would just get back into bed and wouldn't remember a thing in the morning.

My mum told me that I was different, for one mine was nothing to do with needing the toliet, I would never leave my bed but would be sitting up straight in my bed making stupid noises and throwing my arms about, not scared like I'd just had a nightmare, just really disorientated. She said she used to put her hands on me and ask me really loud clear questions until I calmed down enough to wake myself up properly and answer them. Then I'd be able to settle down to sleep again.
I don't remember any of this though.. But it definately doesn't happen to me or my sister anymore. Maybe its just a case of riding it out and settling your son down on a night to night basis?

Good luck, and don't be too worried x
