adolescent delayed sleep disorderMy 16 year old daughter has been suffering with delayed sleep disorder for 2 years now. We have tried light therapy(she would not put up with it longer than 3 weeks, we've tried diet changes, early bed times later bed times, sleeping pills, trazadone and now just last week the Dr. is trying her on celexa 20 mg because now she is just exhibiting signs of depression She dropped out of highshool in March, too tired to concentrate. She is using her sleep problem as an excuse for everything and she is unable to disipline herself to change. We did go to the Sleep Clinic for this diagnosis.
Do you have any suggestions for us to try? This is a girl who wants it done for her , she doesn't want to work on this, just thinks it will get better on it's own even though we've talked to Dr.'s Can you give any other suggestions?
Re: adolescent delayed sleep disorderIs there anyway she can go to school or be taught at home during the hours she is awake? What about behavioral therapy to help her not only with the depression but also to understand the importance of complying with therapy. Medications specifically for this are usually not that helpful. There are physicians who specialize in circadian rhythm disorders specifically but they would likely offer the same advice.

Re: adolescent delayed sleep disorderdid you get her to sleep 4 hours or so during the day and another 4 or so during the night? that way she can keep her late sleep time and be rested too. I'm doing that - when I can. I have delayed sleep phase disorder as an adult. It started in highschool. I'm 35. Not depressed, in a 9-5 job. I'm not saying it's not tough though.
