Dry Air Affecting Sleep?

Post a new topicby davidlaw69 on Sat Feb 07, 2009 1:30 pm

I started having a problem where I would fall asleep easily, but only sleep for 60-90 minutes, then awaken with some congestion and not be able to get back to sleep until around 5 am, if at all. My doctor put me on a 30-day trial of Ambien. The first week it had no effect. After that I was able to sleep through the night. However, I tried one night per week to go without the Ambien, and the same problem re-emerged (suggesting to me that Ambien helps with the symptom, but not whatever is the underlying cause).

Recently, I had my air conditioning checked for unrelated purposes. The technician noted that the humidity level was at 21%, and that this was low and should be around 35%. He recommended a humidity bypass device be installed on my air conditioning unit, which would correct for the low humidity. This would cost $600-700.

From a layman's perspective, it would seem to me that increased humidity might help reduce the congestion I feel when I awaken, and perhaps this would reduce the risk of my awakening if congestion is the cause. But it doesn't seem that congestion is the reason I cannot get back to sleep (but I am not a doctor).

Does anyone have any idea whether getting this device to improve humidity in my home might assist me with my sleeping problem?
