High school student can't sleep

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Dec 10, 2001 4:24 pm

I am a high school senior with a work load of 4 classes under my belt. I am involved in a numerous amount of extracurricular activities. I get a maximum 4 hours of sleep each night. I take lengthly naps during the day and stay up all night.
Are these symptoms of depression or INSOMNIA?
I would also like to ask you, doctor, if you know how long it has been before INSOMNIA was detected and discovered? If you don't mind, I'd like to ask you if you know the entire history of INSOMNIa/

It sounds more like you have poor sleep habits or hygiene. Insomnia is really a condition where a person has the time to sleep but can't. I am not sure from your description if that is true for you. If it is, improving sleep hygiene is the first step. Typically I have my patients with insomnia stop taking naps and eliminate caffeine from their diets. That is usally a good start. As for the history of insomnia, there are many references to it for centuries. There are also many types of insomnia.
