I can't fall asleep

Ever since I was little I haven't been able to sleep normally. I've come to more or less accept it, but as I have more responsibilities and have to depend on myself more, I come to envy my sister's ability to fall asleep within minutes of lying down, at a normal time. I've tried everything from just laying down at earlier times to wait for sleep - and ended up laying there for hours awake - to cutting out all caffeine; I've even tried counting sheep. I just wish I could sleep when I wanted to, instead of being up till absurd hours like now.

Insomnia is a tricky thing to tackle and most people wonder why it can't be cured with a few sleeping pills. Even if you think you've tried everything you probably haven't. Insomnia is often due to psychological reasons- are you depressed? feeling overly stressed or anxious?

You have to remember sleep is part of the cycle of daily life, so it's important to pay attention to your physical and mental health throughout the day. Sleep doesn't just begin as soon as you get into bed, the day reflects the night. If you've suffered from sleeplessness for a long time, unfortunately your system has learned this new habit. But as just as your subconscious can learn and ingrain negative sleep habits, it can learn positive ones.

Try behavioral changing techniques like CBT or Hypnosis, if you can change your habits, you can improve sleep and regain a normal sleeping pattern. Try meditation at night and in the day. Eat well and drink lots of water. Engage in mental and physical activities in the day.
