Insomnia

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue May 14, 2002 9:18 am

I have had chronic insomnia for many years associated with depression I have tried antidepressent medications that make you drowsy, but they don't help me sleep. Right now I take ativan but feel I am getting dependent on it and my body is accomdating. I have also tried nature methods: valerian root, Kava Kava, warm milk. Is there any other medication that I can take that won't cause dependence and acomodation?

Not really. Most medicatins used for inducing sleep can cause the patient to build up a tolerance. The best approach to insomnia is to learn behavioral techniques like relaxation and have some therapy to help deal with the insomnia and eventually get off the drugs. For many patients, treating the insomnia often helps with the depression. If you haven't seen a psychiatrist or psychologist yet for this, it may be a good idea.

Hello, I was reading your post with great interest. My dear friend has had insomnia for years, associated, I think with depression associated with a long, unhappy marriage. Often, he can fall asleep, but wakes up very quickly. Sometimes he just can't get to sleep. How people like you and him keep going, i don't know. Have you found anything to help you since your post?? I'd be interested.
