phase 3 and 4

Post a new topicby Guest on Thu Aug 22, 2002 11:57 pm

I have been to a sleep lab for sleep problem evaluation. I was told that I have no phase 3 and phase 4 sleep during the night. And I spend about 75% of the time in stage 2. What would be the cause of this problem?

there are many things that can reduce the amount of stage 3 and 4 sleep. First of all, everyone loses the ability to have stage 3 and 4 sleep as they get older. Some elderly people have none at all. Depression can also lead to a decrease in 3 and 4 sleep. Conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea can cause frequent arousals from sleep and thus preventing the patient from getting into the deeper stages of sleep like 3 and 4. Finally, in a sleep lab, waking up frequently due to it being a foreign environment or discomfort from all the wires, etc could also decrese the stage 3 and 4 sleep.
