God Bless you, your children and your family. Unfortunately, the first instinct as humans is to fear or dislike what we don't understand. I guess it's just easier than taking the time to learn and understand. Learn to forgive those who don't understand, including your father. Trust me, he knew it was much more than laziness, but he was afraid and did not know how to try to understand. My grandmother has been diagnosed with narcolepsy for all of my life...actually longer...she was initially diagnosed in her early 20's. I have no idea what she may have gone through prior to diagnosis, but she has never told me about anyone who wasn't understanding of her condition. My heart goes out to you. She will be 76 in June, and has recently began changing...she is not the Mom we used to know. About 2 years ago, she was diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimers disease, and within the past few weeks, we have seen a multitude of changes in her. After taking her to a Neurologist who does not believe she has Alzheimer's disease at all, we are beginning to wonder if what we are seeing is the long term effects of Narcolepsy. Unfortunately, there has been very little research done in this area, so there is no way of truly determining one way or another (that we know of). Thankfully, the neurologist that she is working with is wonderful. I am hopeful he will help us. Take care and be careful. Stay strong, you will find a way to live with this!
