Post a new topicby Guest on Thu Mar 11, 2004 5:54 pm

Huberta had a post w/ ?'s re: NARCOLEPSY. I have answres for you, I also DO have narcolepsy. You asked, "When can narcolepsy 1st be diagnosed?". It can be diagnosed x anytime a patient presents to a Dr. w/ symptoms of it. The patient will go through all of the diagnostic tests ( polysomnogram, MSLT, HLA typing, etc. ). Sympton onset is usually during adolescence through the early 20's, but can occur earlier or later.
You also asked about treatments available. Medication Management is the most effective. Med's for the daytime sleepiness are stimulants ( eg, Dexedrine, Provigil, Ritalin, Adderall ). Meds for cataplexy ( eg, Xyrem, tricyclic antidepressants, & SSRI antidepressants ). Hope this info is helpful.
