Provigil vs Nuvigil

Post a new topicby shawnya on Wed Jul 15, 2009 3:47 pm

I have been on provigil which with the severety of my narcolepsy is useless. I went to my new neurologist last wk and he told me that he was going to put me on Nuvigil. It seems ike a joe to me. I am telling him that i am having 10 or more episodes while still on provigil a day. Am I wrong or doesnt it seem like he should be doing a little more? Let me know what you think, please!!!!!!!

I actually had an in depth conversation with my 3 neurologists about Provigil vs Nuvigil...at different times. They all gave me the same response which is, the patent on Provigil is just about to run out so there will now be the freedom for a generic to be produced. Nuvigil works exactly the same way and the essentially the same chemical make-up as Provigil minus some inactive preservatives. Nuvigil will then be patented so that no generic form is available, thereby, increasing revenue for the drug company. So, if your neurologist is suggesting putting you on Nuvigil..then I suggest getting a "NU" neurologist. I, myself, have been through a ridiculous amount of drugs trials over the last 3 years and we always end up back at Provigil. Even though I still have episodes on 400mg/day, it is still the most effective with the fewest side effects. All others, ritalin, adderall, concerta, etc, etc turn me into a zombie and actually worsen my cataplexy. There is an option to go above the highest recommended dosage of Provigil (max 400mg/day) but it would require being seen and followed by a cardiologist which is what I have been doing for the past year. However, only going past 400mg in a given day if absolutely necessary. I would suggest doing your research and finding a neurologist who is recommended by other neurologists in regards to narcolepsy. If your neuro isn't an expert then I promise you it will be you who is suffering through your days of dozing...not the neuro!
