I have had rem behavior disorder for over 30 years. It started when I was about 9 soon after growing out of sleep walking. It always occurs in the first hour of sleep and it is violent in nature. I am normally awakened by hitting something or screaming. If your problem is hours into sleep than you most likely have night terrors. (Different sleep disorder). I eventually got help and was given 100 milligrams of zoloft before bed and I no longer have any episodes.

There is no known cause and according to other sites a percentage of people develope parkinsons disease. Try zoloft.

It is not para normal. I wish it was. I am not a doc but a 50ish male with RBD and PD. I did have episodes when I was young but not sure if they are tied into my current RBD. Since you are young. , I would worry about your stress load. Stress is a big factor in bringing out the best of RBD in us. In college? Newly married? Have lots of bills to pay? Other stress? If so go see your doc and discuss it and come up w/ a plan. If you do not want to go to the doc then I would suggest very stringent exercise. Exercise is a stress reliever and may help. I am not talking about a walk around the park. 3-5 miles jogging per day. If this helps just remember that down the road in your 30s and 40s you will have to re evaluate. Since there is no cure age will catch up with you. Hopefully by then there will be a cure. Peace and a sincere wish for a good nights sleep.
