Is there a 'correct' way to wake someone up during an episod

My husband suffers from RBD in conjuction with Lewy Body Dementia and Frontal Lobe Dementia. Sometimes, it is impossible to wake him up. The worst episodes occur when he is sleeping in his recliner during the day and early evening. He is unwilling to go to bed earlier. He will get out of his recliner and stumble around the living room. Several nights ago, he was heading toward the bay window attempting to get out. I talk to him quietly then louder: wake up, wake up. He becomes combative and insists he is awake. I am giving him his bedtime meds earlier in the evening but haven't seen a change. He takes 2 mg. Requip and 1 mg clonazepam among others. This episode was the first time I was afraid for my safety and his.......
We have slept separately for over 1 year. When I woke up with his hands around my throat, I decided that it was time for a change.

I would appreciate any advise.
