When eating closer to bed time, I would wake up sometime after falling asleep gasping for air with a discomfort as if I was going to vomit. I have been experiencing this for a few years now. I found by not eating so close to bed, and sleeping on my side it happens less frequently. But it scares me. My wife and I have our first child on the way, and I have heard of people dying from sleep apnea. Any ideas of what exactly this is, and how to eliminate it all together ?

You should definitely have this looked into.

I had acid reflux years ago, but it went away with a change of diet.

However, there may be other far more serious causes. I have been reading about esophageal cancer in the press lately. In addition, a colleague long ago died of stomach cancer discovered too late to do anything about. His doctor took too long to get around to considering the possibility of stomach cancer. His symptom was being unable to keep food down sometimes.

You cause may be trivial, but it may not.
