Blood Pressure Spikes caused by OSA?

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon May 13, 2002 3:34 pm

My dad is in the hospital after surgery on his carotid artery that seemed to go fine. They won't let him out of ICU because the last 3 nights at like 4am he's had these massive Blood Pressure spikes accompanied by chest pressure and some dizziness I KNOW he has sleep apnea, although not oficially diagnosed. He's snored like a chain saw as long as I can remember...loud enough to hear thru several walls.

He is gasping for air while he sleeps (I noticed when he napped during a hosp visit yeterday). His blood oxygenation level is in the 80s when it's good and lower when not so good. Now they have him on oxygen again.

Is it possible that these bouts the last 3 nights with the BP spikes etc are being caused by the sleep apnea? (He is 70 and overweight).

Thank you.

certainly patients with obstructive sleep apnea can have increases in the blood pressure while sleeping. I cannot say if this is what is happening to your father. You should consider discussing your suspicions with his doctor.
