Can I stop using cpap mach. after weight loss?

Post a new topicby jljl7865 on Tue Jan 08, 2008 4:23 am

I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH SERVERE SLEEP APNIA 6 MONTHS AGO. STARTED USING CPAP MACH. AND MASK.I DONT FALL ASLEEP IN THE DAYTIME ANYMORE, BUT I CANT STAND WEARING THE MASK EVERY NIGHT. I AM 100 POUNDS OVERWEIGHT, AND AM LOSING THE WEIGHT. THE GIRL AT THE CLINIC SAID I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO STOP USING THE MACHINE. MY WIFE USED TO WORK FOR A BARIATRIC DOCTOR,AND SAID MANY PATIENTS WHO USED A CPAP MACHINE ,DIDN'T HAVE TO USE THE CPAP AFTER THEY LOST A LOT OF WEIGHT.THAT IS MY HOPE AND GOAL. DOES ANYONE KNOW OF SOMEONE WHO WAS ABLE TO STOP USING CPAP BY LOSING WEIGHT?

All the literature seems to suggest that significant weight loss is therapeutic for OSA. If your weight loss by itself is sufficient to prevent collapse of tissues in your throat, or if weight loss, combined with a surgical solution can work, your physician can re-evaluate your need for CPAP or similar therapy. Keep up the good work losing weight, and ask your doctor.
