Considering UPPP

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Mar 27, 2002 9:18 pm

I have been diagnosed w/ mild to moderate sleep apnea. My AHI/RDI index was 24 and the lowest Oxygen saturation reading of the evening was 84. I am a 27 year old non-obese (5'8" 180 lbs) with very large tonsils and a long uvula. I do not want to wear a CPAP the rest of my life but want to take care of the Sleep Apnea. My concern w/ the UPPP is that success rates are very low at 50%. What is the average profile of a UPPP patient? What are the success rates for patients of my profile? My doctor told me that there are very few options I can do at this point other than the CPAP or UPPP. He's suggested that the dental brace is not very effective.

Thanks.

The patients who tend to do well with the UPPP are generally thin, have more mild disease without significant oxygen desaturation below 85% and have obvious anatomical abnormalities to fix. The dental devices are effective and may also be appropriate for someone like yourself. The success rates are unfortunately individual to the physician as well as the patient but 50"% is about right. A second opinion may help you
