Odd sensation

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Dec 31, 2001 3:37 am

I was not sure which forum this would be appropriate, it is an unusual sensation I am having. For about a year and a half now usualy when I am relaxed like just before I go to sleep I will have a strange thing happen with my breathing. It only affects one breath and the only way I know to describe it is like this: It feels like my body is kicking out an extra breath and makes me either breathe out one time really hard or in real fast. It startles me when it happens. Again it is only for one breath! I had a pulmonary strength function test performed and it was normal. I also have PVCs and some different numbness and burning sensations and muscle twitches that remain undiagnosed. Those have been going on for about six years, but this breathing thing I have had for just a year or so. ANY ideas what this could be??? Please, any help would be appreciated.

What you describe sounds like a normal reflex the lungs have to prevent collapse when you go to sleep. It is similar to a sigh or a yawn. Basically your lungs have receptors in them that let the brain know when that area of the lung hasn't expanded in a while. It sets off a reflex and you either yawn, sigh or take in a deep breath or let out a deep breath. You may have only recently noticed it but it has likely been happening your whole life. Most people don't notice it.

This is faster and harder than a sigh or a yawn though, almost as fast as a hiccup but not a hiccup. Could it still be what you described? I was afraid that it could be that my neurological function that makes one breathe could be messed up, or would the symptoms of that happening be different that what I am describing? Thanks again for your help and thank you for responding so fast.

P.S. My stomach goes in or out really fast too when this happens depending on if the air is going in or out.

it still sounds similar to the reflex I described. If the neurological function of breathing was truly impaired there should be more symptoms associated with it.
