Okay, I had my sleep study and here are the results....what now?

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Mar 27, 2002 2:31 pm

I had my initial split night study but I didn't sleep well and did not have enough to warrant a split night study. By the end of the night, I was close though and here is the weird part--I didn't snore but for the last ten or so minutes of the test. I usually snore all night within 5 minutes of laying my head on the pillow.
Here is what my test showed:

Apnea index 1.2 per hour
Hypopnea index 0
A/H index: 1.2 per hour
Total apneas: 7
SaO2 range: 88-95
PLMS with arousal index: 0 / hr
Supplimental O2 : 0
Longest event 15 seconds.

Recording time was 378 minutes with 350 sleeping. Architecture was fairly normal. Sleep efficiency was 93%. 42 arousals noted. Latency to stage 1 sleep was 15 minutes. Latency to REM was decreased at 39 minutes. Delta wave sleep was achieved. Experienced 3 mixed apneas and 4 obstructive apneas. Longest apnea was 15 seconds.

Impressions:
1) Mild upper airway resistance without evidence to suggest significant sleep apnea.

2) Decreased latency to REM sleep at 39 minutes. If a clinical suspicion of Narcolepsy, would recommend repeating overight followed by multiple sleep latency test. Clinical correlation is suggested.

NOW FOR MY QUESTION:
This night sleep is totally abnormal for me. If I had slept well, and snored like a buzz saw like I normally do, the results would have probably been different, I am guessing?

I am scheduled for a CPAP follow-up but am wondering if I really have Apnea to to begin with. I am really confused and discouraged right now.

Thanks,
Dreamy

I can see why you are confused. Every person has a night to night variability in sleep and that may have happened with you. Do you know if they used nasal pressure monitor on you or a thermistor? Sorry for the technical part but if you can get the answer to that, it will help me answer your question better.

Actually, I am not sure.

I was hooked up to about sixteen monitors or so (chest, head, chin/throat, something on my upper lip to measure air intake, legs).

I didn't have anything foreign other than paste on monitors.

Thanks for the help!

sorry i can't be of more help. you may want to call the sleep lab and ask them specifically if they used a nasal pressure canula on you or a thermistor to detect respiratory events. that information would be helpful.
