persistent cough w/spells of apnea

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Feb 05, 2002 4:47 pm

Beginning Dec. 13th I became sick with flu like symptoms; (mostly) bad cough , achey feeling, and some congestion. After waiting it out for 3 days I went to the Dr. who said I had bronchitis and the flu. I received a shot of Decadron, Z-pak, cough medicine, and something for the aches. Two week later I was still sick without the achiness but was having coughing spells that ended with the inability to inhale or exhale almost spasmic (3-5X) a day. Went back to the DR. who said it was bronchitis. Put me on another Z-pak, cough medicine (Entex), Medrol pak, and Serevent inhaler. A week later I was still sick, went back, and he said it was probably viral. Sent me with a new inhaler, Advair. Week later I made an appointment with an ENT specialist who was very thorough and scheduled to do allergy test. He put me on Ventolin inhaler as needed, Tussi-12, Zyrtec, amitriphylin (migraines), and Singulair. I am still coughing, hoarseness, will loose my voice in a sentence for 2-3 words, and have had worse attacks during my sleep will wake up unable to breath. He is sending me to a pulmonary specialist and doesn't want to do the allergy test and has me taking only the Singulair and ventonlin as needed. I am 29 and I do not smoke. I dont live with a smoker. I am athletic and until now never had respiratory problems. WHAT IS GOING ON WITH ME?

I can't tell you without examining you myself. However the symptoms you describe could be related to an allergy or an infection with very reactive airways. Reactive airways just means that they go into spasms and constrict, similar to what happens in patients with asthma. A pulmonologist is a good idea and he or she should be able to tell you what is causing these symptoms in you.
