Sleep Attacks

Post a new topicby Guest on Fri Apr 26, 2002 9:51 am

Hello my name is Frank
I have been having problems latley with sleep attacks.
Let me explain I can be sitting here at work and Boom My vison is out of focus and my head drops.
This happens allot when I am driving.
I am not tired when I start to drive then out of nowhere I am in a different zone. I feel like I have been leaving my body for short periods and coming back. I even have gone to the extreme and starting slapping myself to keep me alive.
Does anyone have a clue as to what this is.
I am a very active 26 year old male.
I excersize 5 days a week have a great diet.
I get about 6 to 7 1/2 hours of sleep a night.
Please any information would help
Thanks in advance

Dear Frank,
Have you had a sleep study done? It sounds like sleep apnea. I'm not a Doctor but I know people that have had the same symptons. A sleep study may answer your questions.
Good Luck!
Stay Alert!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth7

Hi Frank:
From your description it looks that you have Hypersomnia which could be due to fragmented sleep (due to diseases like sleep apnea or periodic leg movement syndrome) or due to other diseases like Narcolepsy or idiopathic Hypersomnia.
I would recommend that you see a sleep specialist to schedule an overnight sleep study followed by Multipe Nap Testing. Meanwhile you should avoid driving your car or operate heavy machinary, and avoid drinking alcohol or taking sedativges in PM.

Good Luck

Hi Frank, everyone here has given you great advice. By your description you are very sleepy and therefore need to see a specialist to determine the cause. One main thing that you can do until then ( other than not driving which I HIGHLY recommend) is to increase the amount of time your give yourself to sleep to 8 hours a night. Chronic sleep deprivation can cause this as well.
