Night time jerkingMy husband keeps me awake! He has the normal falling asleep jerks, but also jerks about at different times of the night, especially an hour or two before time to get up. Sometimes the jerking is severe, almost like a full body convulsion. He has a past history of walking in his sleep, but hasn't done that for several years. The jerking doesn't wake him, but I'm a light sleeper and wake often. Does anyone have an idea of what this condition is and how it can be treated?
Sponsored LinksRe: Night time jerkingi am experiencing this with my own partner, and after doing a bit of research i think he has 'Periodic Limb Movement Disorder'. the symptoms you describe are exactly what my partner does, and though it doesn't wake him, it is constantly waking me!! there is a section on this website about the disorder that you can read.
i am going to research into natural methods of treating this, so if i have any results i shall post them back here. [quote] My husband keeps me awake. Re: Re: Night time jerkingMy husband began exhibiting similar behavior 2 years ago. I would describe it as a seizure or convulsion. His eyes are wide open, his limbs go rigid and he grunts with each muscle contraction (I assume that's what's happening) as if the air is being forced out of his lungs. He has no awareness or recollection of these episodes.
My husband is almost feeble (for lack of a better description) for hours after an episode. This is becoming more pronounced and prolonged with each occurrence. Do either of your partners exhibit confusion and/or disorientation after one of their episodes? You are indeed correct that this might be Periodic Limb Movement Disorder or PLMD. This can only truly be diagnosed with a sleep study or polysomnogram or PSG. A PSG will show how frequently and how severe is the PLMD. It will also show if it is arousing the sleep cycle. This should be done at a Acredited Sleep Lab and an MD that specializes in Sleep Disorders. I work in one of these facilities. Lastly, it is generally the partners of people with sleep diorders that call us first. He sould also get a simple blood test to rule out any iron deficiency or anemia as this can also cause PLMD. There are several, very safe medications out there that can treat this.
