Hypnopompic Hallucinations - many times every night

Post a new topicby Guest on Thu Jun 21, 2001 9:43 am

I get hypnopompic hallucinations several times each night, and have done for 10 years (I'm 26). They historically don't affect my ability to get a restful night's sleep, but they are now starting to.

I set up a camcorder with nightvision to record my sleep, and found then on each night I recorded (can only record first hour and a half on one tape) I typically have one to 3 episodes. Usually involves my sitting up and talking, or looking around the room confused. Sometimes I remember that I had experienced a hallucination, sometimes I don't remember anything.

Last night I had 5 episodes in the first hour of sleep. Twice, the camera showed that I sat up, looked at the far wall in the room, then walked over to the wall and stared blankly at it for 2 mintutes motionless. I remember
'seeing' a cable or wire snaking across the wall as if it was alive, and I remember going to look for it.

Another occasion I sat up in bed, aimed at the camera with an imaginary gun then fired.

I often talk. Things like; "This is an attempt to make it seem like I have committed some crime. I am going to NOT commit any crime."

Every night, at least once, I hallucinate an intruder in the room and typically jump out of bed to 'face' this imaginary foe, only to wake up a few seconds later and go back to bed. Typically telling myself; "You are going insane!"

Am I mad?

No your not mad! I am 36 yo and have been having Hypnogogic hallucinations since I was in the fifth grade (that is the earliest one I remember anyway)Within the first hour of sleep I see people in my room, bugs on walls, snakes on walls, things that couldn't possibly be in my room but in the context of my dream they make sense. My eyes are wide open and I think I am awake and I can describe in detail the people I see. Sounds like your dreams are hypnogogic not hypnopompic- which happen when you're waking if I understand that correctly. Some mornings I wake up exhausted and I drive my husband crazy but besides that no lasting effects. I would love to know how to stop them though! Good luck!

Micheled,
I went to my doctor this morning and spoke with her about it. As soon as I told her how often, and that it was affecting my sleep and my wife's sleep she said that she'd refer me to a sleep specialist.

I'm going to undergo a full suite of sleep study experiments... I'll post again when I know anything more... :-/

Good luck. I have often thought of going to a sleep clinic too, but I'm sure I'd have the best, most uneventful nights sleep ever! Who knows! Let me know how everything turns out. I know there are some nights my husband would love to send me somewhere!
