REM while awake...

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Feb 19, 2002 8:00 am

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong thread.

My 4 and a half year old son has had three occurences that I have been aware of where he is awake and coherent, yet both eyes (while open) appear to have REM - from side to side very quickly.

I ask him if he can stop it and he cannot. I ask him if he can make it happen and he cannot.

It appears to be an involunantery movement and has me concerned.

It usually lasts a few minutes then stops.

Any idea of the cause and how to stop this?

you may be describing something called nystagmus. This is a rapid movement of the eyes. You should mention it to your son's physician and have him seen by a specialist. I am sorry but I don't know the causes of nystagmus in children.
