Was this a sleepwalking episode or a night terror?

Post a new topicby Guest on Sat Mar 16, 2002 9:49 pm

My husband did something that I am concerned about the other night. It was about 3am, sat at the edge of bed for a minute and then proceeded to the window and urinated all over the curtains. I woke up, tried to wake him up, first saying his name which didn't work, then, from behind I tapped him on his shoulder (I know now I shouldn't have done that). He immediately turned around, stared for 5 seconds, then let out a scream I have never heard before. Then he did it again.. Mumbled something like nad dream and got back into bed. He had quite a bit to drink that night. He also said he used to sleepwalk when he was a child. My question is is this common?? To urinate somewhere else besides the toilet? Please advise.

it is not common but certainly can happen. sleep walking and episodes like this can be brought out by psychological stress or sleep deprivation. Alcohol can also make sleep very disrupted and possibly have been the problem here. It is important to avoid either condition in patients with sleep walking. If it continues, an evaluation by a sleep physician would be appropriate.
