Young adult sleepwalking

Post a new topicby Guest on Sat Mar 30, 2002 11:04 pm

I have a college-age (18 yrs.) son and although he has always had episodes of waking up, sitting straight up in bed, and not remembering a thing, it is now different.
Now he actually gets out of bed (to use the bathroom, I guess) and can fall asleep on the bathroom floor, he can move heavy dressers thinking it is the bedroom door. He does things like walking around when he's sharing a room with friends and sit on their heads (and these kids say he is truly asleep, not playing a joke.
He is being treated for OCD but does not always take his meds.
He remembers absolutely nothing in the morning when you speak to him about it.
What should we do?

Stress and sleep deprivation can exacerbate sleep walking. It is important in these patients, esp. at this age, to make sure they are getting consistantly good sleep every night before embarking on more medications. Sleep walking by itself is a normal occurance and generally gets less as the patient gets older but can be worsened intimes of stress and poor sleep.
